EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

THROUGH THE LITURGICAL YEAR (Vol. 3, n. 47)

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C

October 21-27, 2007

“Prayer Warriors”

(+) In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

(A moment of silence)

SONG: Any Eucharistic hymn or any other appropriate song may be sung.

WORDS OF ORIGEN

Since we must combat principalities and powers, the rulers of this world of darkness, if you wish to vanquish and sweep them away, lift your hands, lift your actions … Thus may you triumph over the people who fight against you, over Amalek, and be worthy of having it said of you: The Lord fought in secret against Amalek. Lift your hands also toward God, put into practice the apostle’s commandment: Pray without ceasing …It is in raising prayers to God that one’s enemies will be routed. Also, if you wish to vanquish your enemies, lift your actions, cry to God, persevere, be on your guard in prayer as the apostle says. This is the battle that triumphs over the enemy.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

(From Commission Francophone Cistercienne, Prieres au fil des heures, cf. Days of the Lord, vol. 6, Collegeville: The Liturgical Press, 1991, p. 269)

Leader: God of holiness,

you have the power to make us strong by your grace

and vigilant by the strength of the gospel.

Remember us in the fight of prayer

and keep us faithful in meditating on your word.

Thus we fervently await

the coming of your Son, Jesus our Lord.

Assembly: Amen.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

  1. Why did the Amalekites wage war against Israel? What was the response of Moses to that attack? What was the significance of Moses’ uplifted hands and of the staff of God in his hand? How is this episode a call to faithful vigilance and incessant prayer? What are our personal insights concerning this episode of Moses interceding intensely for the victory of the fledging army of Israel? How does the role of Aaron and Hur in assisting Moses’ ministry of intercession impact us? How does the figure of Moses as a “prayer warrior” inspire us?

2        Why is the importunate widow a “prayer warrior”? How did her perseverance and continual intercession become a victory? Do we see ourselves in the role of the importunate widow? Do we likewise see ourselves as the unjust judge who could be decisively influenced by prayer? How does God respond to our prayers? Are our prayers insistent and persevering?

3        What is the object of our prayer? Is our prayer animated by faith? Do faith and good works animate our Christian life? Does our prayer lead to life transformation? What do we do when life disappoints us and we become deeply discouraged? Do we firmly believe that God will secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him? How do we persevere in prayer? Are we “prayer warriors”? What makes us true “prayer warriors”? Do we meditatively gaze upon Jesus Christ, the ultimate “prayer warrior”? Why is Christ a “prayer warrior” on the cross?

PRAYING WITH THE WORD

(Cf. Commission Francophone Cistercienne, Tropaires des Dimanches, Dourgne: Le Livre d’heures d’En-Calcat, 1980, 101, Fiche E 239-1 // Days of the Lord: The Liturgical Year, vol. 6, Collegeville: The Liturgical Press, 1991, p. 267)

Assembly: The wait is long, in the night, Lord, and the bitter wind of weariness threatens the flame in our hearts. Will it glow again, to shine on your face, when you knock at our door?

Reader: Watch in prayer, I will come on you suddenly in the night, like a thief.

Assembly: When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?

Reader: Watch in prayer that you may not fall into temptation; who holds fast to the end will be saved.

Assembly: When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?

Reader: Watch in prayer, the one who is ready, I myself will serve in my Kingdom.

Assembly: When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Priest: With trust and confidence, let us present our petitions to our loving God who gave us the gift of his Son, the Eucharistic Master. Let us say to him:

(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER.

1.      For the Holy Father’s General Intention for this month of October: MINORITY CHRISTIANS: That Christians who are in minority situations may have strength and courage to live their faith and persevere in bearing witness to it. We pray: (R.)

2.      For the Holy Father’s Mission Intention for this month of October: WORLD MISSIONARY DAY: That World Missionary Day may kindle a greater missionary awareness in every baptized person. We pray: (R.)

3.      That our fight for justice and human rights in a world full of violence and apathy may be blessed with victory and success. We pray: (R.)

4.      That we may learn the wisdom and meaning of prayer and exercise the ministry of intercession fruitfully and efficaciously. We pray: (R.)

5.      That all the Christian “prayer warriors” may always lift up their hands and offer acts of charity to God, the source of power and victory. We pray: (R.)

6.      That all of us gathered here may gaze lovingly upon Jesus, the ultimate “prayer warrior” and embrace the profound intentions in his heart. We pray: (R.)

7.      That when the Son of Man comes, he may find faith on the earth and bring about life transformation. We pray: (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Help us to love you with all our heart and all our strength. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.
