WORDS OF AN ANONYMOUS SYRIAN WRITER

A sinful woman has proclaimed to us that God’s love has gone forth in search of sinners. For when he called her, Christ was inviting our whole race to love; and in her person he was drawing all sinners to his forgiveness. He spoke to her alone, but he was drawing all creation to his grace … All at once his forgiveness appeared within her soul and chased out of it the darkness of sin. She was cured; she recovered her wits, and gained both health and strength. For when Jesus gives graces he gives them lavishly, as he easily can, being the God of all things.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: Lord our God,

you call us out of darkness into light,

out of self-deception into truth,

out of death into life.

Send us your Holy Spirit

to open our ears to your call.

Fill our hearts with courage

to be true followers of your Son.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Assembly: Amen.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

A.    What lessons can we derive from David’s intoxication by prosperity and his gradual decline into depravity? Are we touched by David’s acknowledgment of personal responsibility for his sins and God’s merciful response? How? What do we do when we fall into a sinful situation? Do we repent and seek out God’s forgiveness? Do we trust in the merciful love and care of God for us?

B.     What insights can we derive from the “sinful woman” who had greatly loved Jesus, the forgiving Love made flesh? Do we endeavor to approach Jesus, wash his feet with tears of repentance and anoint them with the balm of love and spirit of contrition? Do we allow Jesus’ merciful love to transform us? Do we allow his compassion to make us zealous apostles of his healing love?

C.     Do we put our total faith in Jesus Christ who has loved us and given himself up for us? Do we strive to be totally united and crucified with Christ to the point that we are able to say: “I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me” (Gal 2:20a)?

PRAYING WITH THE WORD

Leader: Lord Jesus,

you offered the gift of conversion

to the adulterous and murderous King David.

You forgave the sinful woman

who washed your feet with tears of repentance

and anointed them with the balm of love and spirit of contrition.

Listen to my prayer:

forgive all my sins,

renew your love in my heart,

help me to live in perfect unity with my fellow Christians

that I may proclaim your saving power to all the world.

You are the forgiving Love of God in the flesh

and you live now and forever.

Assembly: Amen.

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Priest: With trust and confidence, let us present our petitions to our loving God who gave us the gift of his Son, the Eucharistic Master. Let us say to him:

(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER.

1.      For the Holy Father’s General Intention for this month of June: FOR SAILORS – That the Lord may protect sailors and all those involved in maritime activities. We pray: (R.)

2.      For the Holy Father’s Mission Intention for this month of June: FOR NORTH AFRICAN CHURCH – That the Church in North Africa may bear witness to God’s love for every individual and all peoples. We pray: (R.)

3.      That God’s merciful love may be experienced by those who have sinned against him and that they may open themselves up to his gift of forgiveness. We pray: (R.)

4.      That today’s Christians may endeavor to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation more meaningfully and worthily. We pray: (R.)

5.      That all of us gathered before the Blessed Sacrament of God’s healing love may be instruments of God’s forgiving love in the various sinful situations that challenge us today, especially where there is hatred, violence, injustice, oppression, exploitation and abuse. We pray: (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

in the likeness of your Son.

Make us living signs of your love

for the whole world to see.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
