WORDS OF ST. LEO THE GREAT

Every Catholic knows that today’s solemnity ranks as one of the principal feasts of the Church. The reverence due to it is beyond all question, because this day is consecrated by the most sublime and wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit … Fifty days from the raising up of Christ after his passion and immolation as the true lamb of God, the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles and assembled believers … And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them power of utterance … The Spirit of truth breathes where he will, and each nation’s own language has become a common property in the mouth of the Church. And so, ever since that day, the clarion call of the gospel has rung out; since the day of Pentecost a rain of charisms, a river of blessings, has watered every desert and dry land, for the Spirit of God has swept over the waters to renew the face of the earth, and a blaze of new light has shone out to dispel our former darkness. In the light of those flaming tongues the word of the Lord has shone out clearly, and a fiery eloquence has been enkindled which is charged with the energy to enlighten, the ability to create understanding, and the power to burn away sin and destroy it.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader:  Father of light, from whom every good gift comes, send your Spirit into our lives with the power of a mighty wind, and by the flame of your wisdom open the horizons of our minds. Loosen our tongues to sing your praise in words beyond the power of speech, for without your Spirit man could never raise his voice in words of peace or announce the truth that Jesus is Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

A.    What is the personal meaning for us of the Holy Spirit as a “gift”? How do we receive this gift and respond to it? Do we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our life as an “Advocate”? Do we allow the Holy Spirit to teach us everything and remind us of all that Jesus did and taught? How is the mystery of God’s indwelling at work in us? Do we endeavor to be an active participant in the mystery of God’s indwelling in us by the power of the Holy Spirit?

B.     Why is the feast of Pentecost a celebration? What is the meaning of this celebration for us personally? Why is the event of Pentecost a cause for rejoicing? Are we Spirit-filled Easter people marked with love, service and joy? Are our thoughts, words and actions “Pentecostal” and do we experience our life as healed and redeemed, blessed and sanctified by the Holy Spirit? Do we allow the power and energy of the Holy Spirit to flow and animate our daily life?

C.     Do we believe that the Holy Spirit is the Easter energy that makes one people of all nations? Do we allow the event of Pentecost to impel us to communicate to the ends of the earth and to the entire creation the radical salvation won for us by the Paschal Mystery of our glorified Lord Jesus Christ? Do we docilely cooperate with the Holy Spirit in “inculturating” the Gospel? Do we allow ourselves to be arbiters of life and the instruments of the Holy Spirit in today’s world?

PRAYING WITH THE WORD

(From Fr. Frank Pavone’s “Pentecost Novena for Life”)

Lord Jesus,

on the day of your Ascension,

you instructed the disciples to pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit.

After nine days of prayer passed,

you sent them that Spirit,

who filled them with light and courage

to go forth and proclaim he Gospel of Life.

Today we pray for an outpouring of that same Spirit.

Send Him upon us, so that we can be Advocates for life.

Send Him upon public officials, so that they can carry out their duty to protect life.

Send Him upon the clergy, so they can proclaim boldly the Gospel of Life.

Send Him upon the abortionists, so that they can stop taking life.

Send Him upon mothers and fathers, so that they can say yes to life.

Send Him upon the unborn, so that they can have life.

Come, Holy Spirit, Lord and Giver of Life,

and renew the face of the earth!

Amen.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Priest: With trust and confidence, let us present our petitions to our loving God who exalted his Son Jesus Christ and in his paschal mystery, gave us the gift and the presence of the Holy Spirit. Let us say to our almighty God:

(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER.

1.      For the Holy Father’s General Intention for this month of May: That following the example of the Virgin Mary, all Christians may allow themselves to be guided by the word of God and always remain attentive to the signs of the Lord in their own lives. We pray: (R.)

2.      For the Holy Father’s Mission Intention for this month of May: That in mission territories there may be sufficient numbers of good and enlightened teachers in the major seminaries and in the institutes of consecrated life. We pray: (R.)

3.      That there be a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Church in the modern world and that the Christian community may experience more deeply the gift of the Holy Spirit. We pray: (R.)

4.      That the Easter-Pentecostal people may be characterized by acts of charity and compassion for the poor, weak and vulnerable and inspire people by the peace, truth and joy in their lives. We pray: (R.)

5.      That animated by the power of the Holy Spirit, Christian disciples may proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the earth in various tongues and creative ways and endeavor to “inculturate” the message of salvation. We pray: (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: God our Father, let the Spirit you sent on your Church to begin the teaching of the Gospel continue to work in the world through the hearts of all who believe. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any Eucharistic hymn, Easter hymn or song of praise may be sung.
