INTRODUCTION
(Cf. Louis Lochet in Meditations on the Sunday Gospel, Year C, ed. John Rotelle, New York: New City Press, 1998, p. 62)
Jesus himself had foretold this mystery. Just as he had prepared his disciples for his passion and resurrection, he prepared them to be open to this new mode of presence. I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. I will not leave you orphans: I will come to you. These promises of Jesus make it abundantly evident that the abiding of the Spirit in the heart is a way not simply of replacing Christ’s own personal presence, but of restoring it, renewing it in the most intimate way. I will come to you. I shall be with you, because I live and you will live also.
SILENT ADORATION
OPENING PRAYER
Leader: Father,
may we always give you thanks
for raising Christ our Lord to glory,
because we are his people
and share the salvation he won,
for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God forever and ever.
Assembly: Amen.

Part II
JESUS MASTER WAY
POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART
A. How does the following promise of Jesus affect us: “The Paraclete, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name will instruct you in everything, and remind you of all that I told you” (Jn 14:26)? Do we believe that the Risen Lord continues to be with us in a far more wonderful way than physical presence through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit?
B. How is the Holy Spirit at work in the early Christian community? What lessons do we glean from the decision of the Council of Jerusalem regarding the controversy whether Gentile Christians needed to be circumcised to attain salvation?
C. Do we call on the Holy Spirit, the divine Paraclete and our most gracious advocate, and trust in him? How receptive are we to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit? Do we allow ourselves to be illumined by him and be led to the light of truth about God and Jesus? Do we surrender our mind, hear and will to the decision of the Holy Spirit? Do we endeavor to bring about the unity of the Church through our humble obedience to the workings of the Spirit of Jesus?
PRAYING WITH THE WORD
(Adapted from Commission Francophone Cistercienne, Tropaires des dimanches, Le Livre d’Heures d’EnCalcat, Dourgne: 1980, 42 // Days of the Lord, vol. 3, Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 1993, p. 201-202)
Leader: Now I am going away. I am going to the Father. He will send you the Creator Spirit. To you I will return. The Spirit of wisdom rouses your hearts: Rise up! People of Easter! Rise up! Take courage!
Assembly: Rise up! People of Easter! Rise up! Take courage!
Leader: In vain does the sun shine if the Spirit does not illuminate the town! In vain do the masons labor if the Spirit does not build the house! In vain are words chanted if the Spirit does not dwell in memory!
Assembly: Rise up! People of Easter! Rise up! Take courage!
Part III

Acting upon the Word
PERSONAL PRAYER
CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.
THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
Priest: With trust and confidence, let us present our petitions to our loving God who gave us his Son Jesus Christ, as our Good Shepherd. Let us say to him:
(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER.
1. For the Holy Father’s General Intention for this month of May: That following the example of the Virgin Mary, all Christians will allow themselves to be guided by the word of God and always remain attentive to the signs of the Lord in their own lives. We pray: (R.)
2. For the Holy Father’s Mission Intention for this month of May: That in mission territories there may be sufficient numbers of good and enlightened teachers in the major seminaries and in the institutes of consecrated life. We pray: (R.)
3. That the memory of the Easter mystery may be more fully alive and present to the Christian community of today through the workings of the Holy Spirit, we pray: (R.)
4. That divisive controversies in our community and society may be peacefully resolved in the light of the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, we pray: (R.)
5. That the light and love of the holy Paraclete may come upon issues and situations that need healing and reconciliation, we pray: (R.)
6. That every day of our life our decisions may always be made under the guidance and impetus of the Holy Spirit, we pray: (R.)
(Other prayers may be added.)

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God forever and ever.
