WORD OF POPE PAUL VI
We cannot tear ourselves away from the dominant thought in the Church during this period of preparation for Easter. It is the thought of penitence, which contrasts with our habits and our mentality. Can a Christian evade the law of penance? Christ uses strong terms: Unless you repent, you will all perish. Do not the need, the duty of penance arise from the intrinsic necessities of our being as fallen human beings? … But let us fix our attention for a moment on the interior aspect of penance … Metanoia means conversion, repentance, inner change. It means a change of outlook. And it is the latter that is most important to change one’s thought, ideas, way of judging oneself, to change one’s conscience, from false to true. In this liturgical period when the exhortation to metanoia, this inner penance, this reordering of our mentality and our morality, becomes pressing, we must ask ourselves with courageous sincerity: what must we correct in our secret, intimate, personal life?
SILENT ADORATION
OPENING PRAYER
Leader: God our Father,
your Word, Jesus Christ, spoke peace to a sinful world
and brought mankind the gift of reconciliation
by the suffering and death he endured.
Teach us, the people who bear his name,
to follow the example he gave us;
may our faith, hope and charity turn hatred to love,
conflict to peace,
death to eternal life.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Assembly: Amen.

Part II
JESUS MASTER WAY
Confrontation with the Word
POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART
A. Do we realize that God is continually revealing himself to us, personally and as a community? Are we grateful that we are recipients of divine favor, just like Moses and the people of Israel? Do we experience the loving God as a liberating and redeeming God? What are the areas in our personal and community life that need liberation?
B. What does the self-disclosure of God, “I am who am” mean to us? Do we realize that God’s self-disclosure is ever mysterious and evokes wonder and awe? Inspired by the vocation of Moses, are we ready to go wherever God would send us and proclaim: “I AM sent me to you”?
C. Do we realize the urgency of personal and community conversion? How do we heed Jesus’ warning based on the two tragic events mentioned in the Gospel: “But I tell you, you will all come to the same end unless you reform”? What lesson do we derive from the Parable of the Fig Tree? Are we ready to receive and respond radically to the last chance and final opportunity given us by God for redemption – his only Son Jesus Christ? Are we willing to be a fruitful fig tree?
PRAYING WITH THE WORD
Leader: God of all compassion, rich in mercy and kindness, you manifested yourself to Moses in the burning bush and fully revealed yourself to us in your Son Jesus Christ. Help us to repent and turn away from our sins in order to embrace you and follow your saving will. We acknowledge our sinfulness. When our weakness causes discouragement, let your love fill us with hope. May your patient mercy move us to respond to the grace of redeeming love you offer us in Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.
Assembly: Amen.
Part III
JESUS LIFE
Acting upon the Word
PERSONAL PRAYER
CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.
THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
Priest: Let us present our petitions to our loving God with trust and confidence and say to him:
(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER.
1. For the Holy Father’s General Intention for this month of March: For governments: when adopting development plans and policies may they take into account the poor and the excluded. We pray: (R.)
2. For the Holy Father’s Mission Intention for this month of March: For the local Church: may they realize the need to form Christians to face the challenges of new evangelization. We pray: (R.)
3. For the people in our world who are distressed, anguished and in need of total liberation: may they experience the compassion and care of our loving God through the instrumentality of people who compassionately serve them. We pray: (R.)
4. For those who are deeply mired in sin and those suffering from sexual, moral and alcohol-substance abuse and other vices: may they heed the voice of our patient and merciful God calling them to repentance and offering them the gift of reconciliation. We pray: (R.)
5. For all of us gathered here: may our Lenten observance of fasting, prayer and almsgiving prepare us better for the Easter glory and make us more efficacious instruments of the “I am who am”, font of creation and of every good. We pray: (R.)
(Other prayers may be added.)
THE LORD’S PRAYER
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Leader: Loving Father,
we rejoice that you are our creator and ruler.
As we call upon your generosity,
transform our frailty into glory,
our sadness into joy,
our selfishness into self-giving.
Renew us deep within and keep us in your love.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Assembly: Amen.
FINAL SONG: Any Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
