(+) In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

(A moment of silence)

INTRODUCTION

(Cf. Days of the Lord, vol. 5, p. 230))

Jesus declared that he was God’s Son. He never stopped denouncing impiety and injustice by his teaching and his conduct; he was the defender of the little ones and the poor; he never ceased to trust and proclaim God. He suffered the sarcasms and insults of those who, putting him to death, thought they were through with him … The cross of the Righteous One which from now on stands on the earth as God’s answer to all the challenges of the powerful of the whole world, is God’s testimony to the invincible strength of those whom brutal force will never cause to falter.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: Father in heaven,

the love of your Son led him to accept the suffering of the cross

that his brothers might glory in new life.

Change our selfishness into self-giving.

Help us to embrace the world you have given us

that we may transform the darkness of its pain

into the life and joy of Easter.

Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Assembly: Amen.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

A.    How do we respond to the permanent challenge of the just persons in our midst? Is the life of the “just one” a reproach to our sinful ways, or is it an invitation to conversion?

B.     Are we ready to embrace the paschal destiny of the “Just One” par excellence, or do we evade the call to heroic and saving sacrifice by stagnating in willful ignorance and incomprehension?

C.     What do we do when we are persecuted for the sake of justice and right? What do we do when people treat us with contempt when we endeavor to replicate in our life the paschal destiny of Jesus Christ, the ultimate “Just One” and the Suffering Servant-Messiah?

PRAYING WITH THE WORD

(Adapted from Days of the Lord, vol. 5, Collegeville: The Liturgical Press, 1993, p. 235)

Leader: To your disciples, you deliver the secret:

the Son of the living God walks toward death,

the Master of the universe is the servant of all.

Assembly: Lead us, Lord, on the way to eternity!

Leader: Human beings will kill the Son of Man,

but he will rise from the dead.

Those who want to be first,

let them be the last of all.

Those who welcome a child in my name

welcome me.

Assembly: Lead us, Lord, on the way to eternity!

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Priest: Embracing the paschal destiny of the “Just One” par excellence - Jesus Christ, the Suffering Servant-Messiah, we turn to him in prayer and say:

(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!

1.      We humbly present to you the Holy Father’s General Intention for the month of September: FOR THOSE WHO WORK IN THE MEDIA: May they use every means of communication with responsibility and respect. We pray:  (R.)

2.      We humbly present to you the Holy Father’s Mission Intention for the month of September: FOR THE PEOPLE IN MISSION LANDS: May they realize their right and duty to keep up to date with developments in the faith and the Church. We pray:  (R.)

3.      For those who do not believe in Christ that the light of the Holy Spirit may show them the way of salvation. We pray:  (R.)

4.      For the just persons whose life of integrity is a living reproach to those who do evil that they may have the courage to continue in their witnessing. We pray: (R.)

5.      For those who seek to be the first in service by being the servant of all and for those who welcome into their lives the “little ones” and the “poor ones of Yahweh”. We pray: (R.)

6.      For those who are fully participating in the paschal destiny of the “Just One” par excellence. We pray:  (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: Lord,

by shedding his blood for us,

your Son, Jesus Christ, established the paschal mystery.

In your goodness,

make us holy and watch over us always.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
