WORDS OF ST. EPHREM

On the mountain Jesus revealed to his apostles that he was the Son of God, that he was in fact God himself … He therefore took them up onto the mountain so that they could hear his Father’s voice calling him Son, and he could show them that he was truly the Son of God and was himself divine. He took them up onto the mountain in order to show them his kingship before they witnessed his passion, to let them see his mighty power before they watched his death, to reveal his glory to them before they beheld his humiliation. Then when the Jews took him captive and condemned him on the cross, the apostles would understand that it was not for any lack of power on his part that Jesus allowed himself to be crucified by his enemies, but because he had freely chosen to suffer in that way for the world’s salvation.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:

A.    How does the sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith, affect us, engage us, and involve us? In what way we are like Abraham in our response to God? In what way we are not like the obedient, faithful patriarch?

B.     How does the sacrificial love of God the Father, consumed in the death of his Son Jesus Christ on the cross, lead us to a spirit of praise and thanksgiving and transform our lives into “Eucharist” – into perfect oblation? Does the saving mystery of God, who did not withhold his own beloved Son, overwhelm us with reverence and gratitude? Are we capable of true self-giving and sacrificial love?

C.     Do we allow ourselves to be drawn intimately into the mystery of Christ’s transfiguration? Do we believe and experience that the glory of the resurrection, the glory of Christian life, cannot be found through anything but suffering? Recognizing that our lives are filled with many kinds of death, do we look forward daily to the Easter glory?

PRAYER

Leader: God and Father of all who believe in you,

you promised Abraham that he would become the father of all nations,

and through the death and resurrection of Christ

you fulfill that promise:

everywhere throughout the world you increase your chosen people.

May we respond to your call

by joyfully accepting your invitation to the new life of grace.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Assembly: Amen.

SONG: Any suitable song may be sung.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Leader: God’s love for his people is so great that he “handed over” his Son for our sake. Transfigured on the mountain, his beloved Son, Jesus, gives us a glimpse of his paschal suffering and Easter glory. In obedient faith, let us now turn to God our Father and pray:

(R.) TRANSFIGURE US, O LORD.

1.      When our faith is tested and when our trust is weak:  (R.)

2.      When we are not able to obey and when we shrink from your Word in all its mysterious harshness: (R.)

3.      When we are afraid to be offered as a spiritual holocaust: (R.)

4.      When we are daunted by the presence of incomprehensible and unjustifiable sufferings in the world: (R.)

5.      When the immensity of your Son’s paschal sacrifice and the beauty of your self-giving love overwhelm us: (R.)

6.      When our Lenten journey leads us through the desert of poverty towards the font of mercy: (R.)

7.      When we endeavor to fight against the desolation of misery, loneliness, violence and hunger that afflict today’s wounded world: (R.)

8.      When our hearts are filled with longing for the joy and wonders of your Easter glory.

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: God our Father,

help us to hear your Son.

Enlighten us with your word

that we may find the way to your glory.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
