WORDS OF ST. PETER CHRYSOLOGUS
As soon as Jesus crossed the threshold he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying ill in bed with a fever. On entering the house he immediately saw what he had come for. He was not interested in the comfort the house itself could offer, nor the crowds awaiting his arrival, nor the formal welcome prepared for him, nor the assembled household. Still less did he look for any outward signs of preparation for his reception. All he had eyes for was the spectacle of a sick woman, lying there consumed with a raging fever. At a glance he saw her desperate plight, and at once stretched out his hands to perform their divine work of healing; nor would he sit down to satisfy his human needs before he had made it possible for the stricken woman to rise up and serve God. So he took her by the hand, and the fever left her. Here you see how fever loosens its grip on a person whose hand is held by Christ’s; no sickness can stand its ground in the face of the very source of health. Where the Lord of life has entered, there is no room for death.
SILENT ADORATION
OPENING PRAYER
Leader: Loving Father, our health and salvation,
you heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds.
In the Eucharist,
you invigorate us with the compassionate touch of your Son Jesus Christ,
through whom your healing comes to us.
We open ourselves to the saving grace that he won for us
by his suffering and death on the cross.
By the power of Jesus who is the Lord of life,
heal us of all our infirmities,
bind up our wounds
and make us whole again.
May we may rejoice in your love,
now and forever.
Assembly: Amen.

Part II
JESUS MASTER WAY
Confrontation with the Word
POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART
Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:
1. How does the tale of Job’s suffering, pain and affliction impact you? What is your own experience of pain and affliction? What are the problems and ills that beset human society today?
2. How do you relate to God in moments of distress and anguish? Did you ever turn against God for what you feel are unmerited pain and suffering? Did you ever accuse God of being cruel and unfair?
3. In your troubles, do you gaze upon the cross and look at Jesus who has surpassed Job in his experience of unmitigated suffering? Do you surrender yourself totally to God’s ineffable saving plan and embrace in a spirit of faith the mystery of human suffering and redemption? Do you turn to Jesus, the wounded Healer, for healing?
PRAYER
(Adapted from Henri Nouwen’s Prayer “Give Me a New Heart for a New Life”)
Leader: Thank you, Jesus, for the mystery of your broken heart, a heart broken by us and for us, that has now become the source of forgiveness and new life. The blood and water flowing from your side show me the new life that is given to me through your death. It is a life of intimate communion with you and your Father. But it is also a life that calls me to give all that I am in service of your love for the world. It is a life of joy, but also of sacrifice. It is a glorious life, but also one of suffering. It is a life of peace, but also of struggle. Yes, Lord, it is a life in water and blood that come from your heart and so bring reconciliation and peace. I adore you, Jesus, as I look upon you whom they have pierced. Let the blood and water that flow from your heart give me a new heart to live a new life.
Assembly: Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.
He binds up their wounds.
He cares for us and is not unmindful of our afflictions.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power.
He lives forever and ever.
Amen.
SONG: Any suitable song may be sung.
Part III
JESUS LIFE
Acting upon the Word
PERSONAL PRAYER
CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.
THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
Leader: God, our loving Father, you console us in our sufferings. We pray for all the sick. Be near to them and give them health and consolation. We turn to you and say:
(R.) LORD, BLESS THE SICK AND SUFFERING.
1. Help the sick in their loneliness and pain. Unite their suffering with the redemptive suffering of your Son Jesus Christ.
2. May our sick brothers and sisters realize that you are there for them in their bed of suffering to give them peace, hope and consolation.
3. We pray for the grace and resources needed by all health care givers and those who take care of sick family members.
4. May all the ills and brokenness in our society be healed and may there be a true solution to the world’s afflictions.
5. Give us the joy of your help; fill us with your blessing; and make us instruments of your healing.
(Other prayers may be added.)
THE LORD’S PRAYER
CONCLUDING PRAYER

in the face of him who is the Life.
Let the gentle hand of Jesus touch us to heal us of all our infirmities.
We are filled with praise and thanksgiving
for where the Lord of life enters
there is no room for death.
