INTRODUCTION

(Cf. Romano Guardini in Meditations on the Sunday Gospel, Year B, New York: New City Press, 1996, p. 80)

What a privilege it must have been to see the Lord at the beginning of his public ministry as he carried holiness into the crowds. How clearly he spoke to the souls of men! … The accounts of these first events are vibrant with spiritual power. Thus St. Mark: And they were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. They were astonished, literally shaken out of themselves. Such was the divine power that poured from his words. Jesus’ sentences were not merely correct as were those of the scribes, they were the words of one having authority. His speech stirred, it tore the spirit from its security, the heart from its rest; it commanded and created. It was impossible to hear and ignore.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: God our Father,

may all nations and peoples praise you.

May the prophet you have raised for us - Jesus,

who is faithful and true,

teach us to speak courageously your saving Word in today’s world.

May we follow him alone, the Divine Teacher

and may he possess our hearts forever.

Assembly: Amen.

Part I

JESUS MASTER TRUTH

Listening to the Word

FIRST READING: Dt 18:15-20

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:

1.      Why is Jesus Christ the true and the greatest prophet of God? As God’s obedient and truthful prophet, what does he communicate to us personally and as a community of believers?

2.      How do we share in Christ’s prophetic ministry? How do we make the voice of truth resound in the world today? In imitation of Christ, are we ready to support our prophetic proclamation with prophetic action?

3.      Are we ready to embrace the challenges and sacrifices of a prophet? Are we ready to help those who are exercising the prophetic ministry in a situation of conflict and extreme duress?

PRAYER

Leader: Lord, you are the Truth. When I keep myself rooted in you, I will live in the Truth. Help me, Lord, to live a truthful life in which I am guided not by popularity, public opinion, current fashion, or convenient formulations but by a knowledge that comes from knowing you. There may be times when holding onto the Truth is hard and painful, and leads to oppression, persecution, and death. Be with me, Lord, if that time ever comes. Let me then experience that to hold onto the Truth means to hold onto you, that Love and Truth can never be separated, and that to live truthfully is the same as being faithful to a loving relationship. Lord, bring me always closer to you who are my teacher, always teaching me out of love.

Assembly: Amen.

SONG: Any suitable song may be sung.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Leader: Let us pray to God who cares for all, and with earnest humility say:

(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER.

1.      That we may have the grace to be receptive to the liberating word of Jesus.

2.      That we may be prophetic in our stance together with Jesus.

3.      That we may have the courage to be peaceful.

4.      That we may have new prophets who can speak openly and lead us to wage peace instead of war.

5.      That in preaching the Gospel we may also be concerned with witness, dialogue, liberation and worship.

6.      That in our prophetic ministry we may bask in truth and share a journey of faith and fidelity.

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: God our Father,

you send the power of the Gospel into the world

as a life-giving leaven.

Fill with the Spirit of Christ

those whom you call to live in the midst of the world

and its concerns;

help them by their work on earth

to build up your eternal kingdom.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
