WORDS OF ROMANO GUARDINI
Peter, his eyes deep in the eyes of the Lord, steps overboard and sets his foot upon a wave. The water bears his weight. He believes. To believe means to share not what Christ believes, but what he is. Thus Peter participates in Jesus’ act. But all divine action is living action that rises and falls. As long as Peter’s gaze holds that of the Master and his faith remains one with the divine will, the water carries him. Then the tension of his trust slackens, consciousness of his human limitations surges in on him and he recalls the power of the elements. He hears the roar of the wind and feels the waves rock beneath his feet. This is the moment of crisis. Instead of leaning more heavily on the support from Jesus’ gaze, Peter drops his eyes. Contact with the divine strength is severed and he started to sink. All that remains of the fleeting, world-conquering faith is the helpless cry: “Lord, save me!”
SILENT ADORATION
OPENING PRAYER
Leader: Lord Jesus, you have dominion over the elements and you are the Master of the sea. When the violent turmoil of life assails us and the waves of distress overwhelm us, help us to turn to you with greater faith and trust. With our gaze locked on you, we cry out to you, “Lord, save me!” for we know deeply that you are there for us. Indeed, you will not fail to extend your strong right hand to draw us out of the raging waters. We adore you; we love you and we continue to place our faith in you, now and forever.
Assembly: Amen.
Part I
JESUS MASTER TRUTH
Listening to the Word
GOSPEL READING: Mt 14:22-33
PERSONAL REFLECTION
(As a tool for personal reflection, please visit the PDDM Website: www.pddm.org // www.pddm.us for BREAKING THE BREAD OF THE WORD [# 37]: A Lectio Divina Approach to the Sunday Liturgy. The Biblico-Liturgical Reflections are an aid for a deeper understanding of the Gospel reading.)
SONG: Any Eucharistic hymn or suitable song of praise may be sung.
Part II
JESUS MASTER WAY
Confrontation with the Word
POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART
Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:
1. When we are buffeted with howling winds and violent storms in the sea of life, how steadfast is our faith?
2. Do we dare walk on the “raging waters” on the basis of our faith in Jesus? When we sin and falter, what do we do? Do we have recourse to Jesus and cry out: “Lord, save me”?
3. In the midst of life’s storms, do we seize the reality of God in the living Christ?
PRAYER
(Cf. P. Talec, Un grand desire, Prieres dans le secret, priers en commun. Paris: Centurion-Cerf, 1971, p. 112.)
Leader: Lord, you are not a God who saves easily.
But as the mountain guide,
you give us assurance …
Make us firm in this love.
Assembly: Lord, when the winds are contrary at sea,
and when the night adds to our trouble …
may your cry reach us:
“Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Lord, to each of us you say, “Come.”
Speak a little louder …
Command that we go to you.
SONG: Any suitable song may be sung.
Part III
JESUS LIFE
Acting upon the Word
PERSONAL PRAYER
CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.
THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
(Cf. Liturgy of the Hours)
Leader: Let us pray to God who cares for all, and with earnest humility say:
(R.) LORD, IN YOU WE PLACE OUR TRUST.
1. Bring your Church to perfection.
2. Watch over Benedict XVI, our Pope.
3. Aid N. ____, our bishop.
4. Guide the college of Bishops.
5. Give shelter to the homeless.
6. Give food to the hungry.
7. Enlighten those who are in darkness.
8. Be a source of consoling support to the aged.
9. Strengthen those consecrated to a life of virginity.
10. Call your chosen people to the new Covenant.
11. Give wisdom to those who make our laws.
12. Strengthen those who are tempted.
13. Save us from the raging waters of life’s turmoil and temptations.
14. Give unfailing light to those who have died.
(Other prayers may be added.)
THE LORD’S PRAYER
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Leader: God our Father,
you have placed all the powers of nature
under the control of man and his work.
May we bring the spirit of Christ to all our efforts
and work with our brothers and sisters at our common task,
establishing true love and guiding your creation to perfect fulfillment.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Assembly: Amen.
FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
