EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
THROUGH THE LITURGICAL YEAR (# 36)
A Weekly Pastoral Tool for the YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST
18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A
July 31 – August 6, 2005
“They All Ate and Were Satisfied”
(+) In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
(A moment of silence)
SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or any appropriate song may be sung.
WORDS OF DAVID GARLAND
(Cf. Meditations on the Sunday Gospel, ed. John Rotelle, New York: New City Press, 1995, p. 111)
Jesus is the source of spiritual nourishment. The feeding of five thousand with the excess collected in twelve baskets indicates the abundant supply for all Israel. The Eucharist, however, will offer bread for all humankind. The story also bears witness once again to Jesus’ compassion to the needy: they do not have to be sent away hungry. Jesus has compassion for the needs of others as God does: The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied. And I will set up my servant David, and he shall feed them; he shall feed them and be their shepherd.
SILENT ADORATION
OPENING PRAYER
(Cf. Post-communion Prayer, Corpus Christi)
Leader: Let us pray.
(A moment of silent prayer.)
Lord Jesus Christ,
you give us your body and blood in the Eucharist
as a sign that even now we share your life.
May we come to possess it completely in the kingdom
where you live for ever and ever.
Assembly: Amen.
Part I
JESUS MASTER TRUTH
Listening to the Word
GOSPEL READING: Mt 14:13-21
PERSONAL REFLECTION
(As a tool for personal reflection, please visit the PDDM Website: www.pddm.org // www.pddm.us for BREAKING THE BREAD OF THE WORD [# 36]: A Lectio Divina Approach to the Sunday Liturgy. The Biblico-Liturgical Reflections are an aid for a deeper understanding of the Gospel reading.)
SONG: Any Eucharistic hymn or suitable song of praise may be sung.
Part II
JESUS MASTER WAY
Confrontation with the Word
POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART
Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:
1. Do we imitate Jesus’ compassionate stance with regards to the crowds who have turned to him for help and healing? What is our personal response to the hungers and yearnings of today’s world?
2. Do we see the miraculous possibility of the “five loaves and two fish” that are available to us in our ministry to the poor? Do we trust that Jesus will multiply our resources? Do we allow ourselves to be satisfied by the superabundant riches of God?
3. Do we believe that the Eucharist is Christ nourishing his people with his own body and blood … that it is the living bread for all mankind? Do we look forward to the future messianic banquet in heaven?
PRAYER
(Cf. Commission Francophone Cistercienne, Tropaires des dimanches, 49)
Leader: Toward whom, Lord, should we walk if not toward you?
You alone speak of life and give it to us.
Make us worthy of the table where your Father calls us today.
Assembly: See our hunger, Savior of the world!
Share with us your word and your bread.
Leader: I am the bread of life,
those who come to me will never hunger,
those who believe in me will never thirst.
Here is the word of my Father:
those who believe in the Son have eternal life.
Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life
and I will raise them on the last day.
Assembly: See our hunger, Savior of the world!
Share with us your word and your bread.
SONG: Any suitable song may be sung.
Part III
JESUS LIFE
Acting upon the Word
PERSONAL PRAYER
CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.
THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
(Cf. Liturgy of the Hours)
Leader: Let us pray to God who cares for all, and with earnest humility say:
(R.) LORD, IN YOU WE PLACE OUR TRUST.
1. Preserve the unity of your Church.
2. Be a source of vibrant life to Benedict XVI, our Pope.
3. Enlighten N. ____, our Bishop.
4. Call new workers to gather the harvest.
5. Fill our families with blessing.
6. Grant health to the sick
7. Be present to those who are dying.
8. Bring exiles back to their homeland.
9. Guard us from natural disasters.
10. Give us clean air.
11. Give us the rain we need.
12. Give us the Bread of Life.
13. Give unfailing life to those who have died.
(Other prayers may be added.)
THE LORD’S PRAYER
CONCLUDING PRAYER
(Cf. Mass of Corpus Christi)
Leader: Lord Jesus Christ,
we offer you living among us
in the sacrament of your body and blood.
May we offer to our Father in heaven
a solemn pledge of undivided love.
May we offer to our brothers and sisters
a life poured out in loving service of that kingdom
where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Assembly: Amen.
FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
