THROUGH THE LITURGICAL YEAR (# 35)
A Weekly Pastoral Tool for the YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or any appropriate song may be sung.
WORDS OF THE CHURCH FATHER, ORIGEN
To the seeker after fine pearls may be applied the words, Seek and you will find, and, Everyone who seeks will find. If you ask what is to be sought, and what will be found by everyone who seeks for it, I say with all confidence: pearls – especially that pearl which will be acquired by those who give their all, who sacrifice everything for it, the pearl Paul meant when he said: I have accepted the loss of everything in order to gain Christ. Everything means beautiful pearls; to gain Christ refers to the one pearl of great price.
SILENT ADORATION
OPENING PRAYER
Leader: Loving Father,
you have prepared for us the astounding treasure of the kingdom of heaven
and have given us the incomparable gift, Jesus Christ,
the ultimate pearl of great price.
Grant that we may open ourselves humbly and totally
to the kingdom value and the love of Jesus Christ.
Give us a discerning heart
that, in our life of discipleship,
we may be like the intelligent scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven
and the head of the household
who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.
We adore you, Father,
and we give you praise
for your radically new act of saving love in your Son, Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
now and forever.
Assembly: Amen.
Part I
JESUS MASTER TRUTH
Listening to the Word
GOSPEL READING: Mt 13:44-52
PERSONAL REFLECTION
(As a tool for personal reflection, please visit the PDDM Website: www.pddm.org // www.pddm.us for BREAKING THE BREAD OF THE WORD [# 35]: A Lectio Divina Approach to the Sunday Liturgy. The Biblico-Liturgical Reflections are an aid for a deeper understanding of the Gospel reading.)
SONG: Any Eucharistic hymn or suitable song of praise may be sung.
Part II
JESUS MASTER WAY
Confrontation with the Word
POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART
Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:
1. Do I recognize the great value of the Kingdom of God and the claim that he has on me and on the Christian community? Do I relish the joy that he brings?
2. Do I seek and pursue the heavenly kingdom with zeal, absolute commitment and personal dedication?
3. Have I allowed myself to be instructed in the kingdom of heaven that like the head of a household, I am able to bring forth from the storeroom both the new and the old? Have I endeavored to proclaim the treasures of the Gospel in the impelling reality of today’s situation?
PRAYER
Leader: For our lack of patience in dealing with the frustrating presence of the weeds in the midst of wheat: Lord, have mercy.
Assembly: Lord, have mercy.
Leader: For our laziness and complacency in procuring the treasure in the field and the one pearl of great value: Christ, have mercy.
Assembly: Christ, have mercy.
Leader: For our lack of spiritual discernment in the matters of the kingdom and for our failure to inculturate the Gospel: Lord, have mercy.
Assembly: Lord, have mercy.
SONG: Any suitable song may be sung.
Part III
JESUS LIFE
Acting upon the Word
PERSONAL PRAYER
PRAYING WITH THE WORD
(Commission Francophone Cistercienne, Tropaires des dimanches, 94)
Leader: Pearl of great price,
wisdom,
precious treasure of the kingdom!
Happy are those who discover them
and in their joy sell all their goods.
Their hearts are free to love.
Assembly: To those who look for the kingdom, everything will be given.
Leader: Seek and you will find;
ask and it will be given to you.
Where your treasure is, there too is your heart.
Share with the poor.
You will have treasure in heaven.
Assembly: To those who look for the kingdom, everything will be given.
CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.
THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
(Cf. Liturgy of the Hours)
Leader: Let us pray to God who cares for all, and with earnest humility say:
(R.) HEAR US, LORD.
1. Make the Church forever new.
2. Grant your gifts to Benedict XVI, our Pope.
3. Aid our Bishop N. _____.
4. Preserve peace among the nations.
5. Fill every home with your presence.
6. Be mindful of this community/congregation.
7. Further justice.
8. Give full harvests to farmers.
9. Be a companion to those who are traveling.
10. Assist workers by your presence.
11. Aid widows.
12. Grant eternal life to those who have gone before us.
(Other prayers may be added.)
THE LORD’S PRAYER
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Leader: God our Father and protector,
without you nothing is holy,
nothing has value.
Guide us to everlasting life
by helping us to use wisely
the blessings you have given to the world.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Assembly: Amen.
FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
